All currency trading is done in pairs. Unlike the stock market, where you can buy or sell a single stock, you have to buy one currency and sell another currency in the forex market. Next, nearly all currencies are priced out to the fourth decimal point. A pip or percentage in point is the smallest increment of trade. One pip typically equals 1/100 of 1 percent.
Back tests – You can read my forex robot reviews to see if the forex robot has back tests which will give you a good idea how it performed historically, some forex robots even back test as for as 15+ years! Ideally, you would want back tests to have been done using real tick data and spreads, thus making the forex robot back test results as accurate as possible in the mt4 strategy tester
Although forex (FX) is the largest financial market in the world, it is relatively unfamiliar terrain for retail traders. Until the popularization of internet trading, FX was primarily the domain of large financial institutions, multinational corporations, and hedge funds. However, times have changed, and individual retail traders are now hungry for information on forex.
The first method, calculate_pips, determines the number of pips that have been generated by this position since it was opened (taking into account any new units added to the position). The second method, calculate_profit_base, calculates the current profit (or loss!) on this position. The third method, calculate_profit_perc, determines the percentage profit on this position. Finally, update_position_price updates the previous two values based on current market data.
For securities, the definition of margin includes three important concepts: the Margin Loan, the Margin Deposit and the Margin Requirement. The Margin Loan is the amount of money that an investor borrows from his broker to buy securities. The Margin Deposit is the amount of equity contributed by the investor toward the purchase of securities in a margin account. The Margin Requirement is the minimum amount that a customer must deposit and it is commonly expressed as a percent of the current market value. The Margin Deposit can be greater than or equal to the Margin Requirement. We can express this as an equation:

Often, closing one losing position will take the margin level Forex higher than 5%, as it will release the margin of that position, so the total used margin will decrease and consequently the margin level will increase. The system often takes the margin level higher than 5%, by closing the biggest position first. If your other losing positions continue losing and the margin level reaches 5% once more, the system will just close another losing position.

The market then wants to trigger one of your pending orders but you may not have enough Forex free margin in your account. That pending order will either not be triggered or will be cancelled automatically. This can cause some traders to think that their broker failed to carry out their orders. Of course in this instance, this just isn't true. It's simply because the trader didn't have enough free margin in their trading account.

In the securities account, your assets are protected by SEC and SIPC rules. In the futures account, your assets are protected by CFTC rules requiring segregation of customer funds. We use real-time margining to allow you to see your trading risk at any moment of the day. Our real-time margin system applies margin requirements throughout the day to new trades and trades already on the books and enforces initial margin requirements at the end of the day, with real-time liquidation of positions instead of delayed margin calls. This system allows us to maintain our low commissions because we do not have to spread the cost of credit losses to customers in the form of higher costs.

If you sell a security short, you must have sufficient equity in your account to cover any fees associated with borrowing the security. If you borrow the security through us, we will borrow the security on your behalf and your account must have sufficient collateral to cover the margin requirements of the short sale. To cover administrative fees and stock borrowing fees, we must post 102% of the value of the security borrowed as collateral with the lender. In instances in which the security shorted is hard to borrow, borrowing fees charged by the lender may be so high (greater than the interest earned) that the short seller must pay additional interest for the privilege of borrowing a security. Customers may view the indicative short stock interest rates for a specific stock through the Short Stock (SLB) Availability tool located in the Tools section of their Account Management page. For more information concerning shorting stocks and associated fees, visit our Stock Shorting page.
In FX, the investor cannot attempt to buy on the bid or sell at the offer as is the case in exchange-based markets. On the other hand, once the price clears the cost of the spread, there are no additional fees or commissions. Every single penny gained is pure profit to the investor. Nevertheless, the fact that traders must always overcome the bid/ask spread makes scalping much more difficult in FX.

After writing the last entry, I realised that I really wanted a way to be able to backtest forex strategies in much the same manner as I had demonstrated previously with equities via the event-driven backtester. I wanted there to be as minimal a difference between the live trading environment and the backtesting system. Hence I decided that I needed to build a Portfolio component that would reflect (as much as possible) the current state of the trading account as given by OANDA.
Let's take a couple of moments to review what we've learned! Currency trading, often referred to as foreign exchange or Forex, is the purchasing and selling of currencies in the foreign exchange marketplace, and is done with the objective of making profits. Because it is liquid, currency trading differs from other types of trading. Currency exchanges are expressed in currency pairs (two different currencies together), using a format that expresses both the country and the type of money.
Trading on margin can be a profitable Forex strategy, but it is important to understand all the possible risks. You should make sure you know how your margin account operates, and be sure to read the margin agreement between you and your selected broker. If there is anything you are unclear about in your agreement, ask questions and make sure everything is clear.
